It’s a pity, neither Hordes of the Black Cross nor Funeral Moon are active at the moment, but two of the chaotic blackened forces from Australia offered a brilliant split release before dissolving their activities. Our contributor from South Africa, MONGREL might be late to praise this with his diabolical scripture but he has not limited himself to provide the accolade this formidable release deserves.
Hordes of the Black Cross — a band that we’ve featured on this blog before — seems to only get better with each release as the material featured on this split is nothing short of relentless. The first three songs by Hordes of the Black Cross marks an improvement in compositional quality, as these songs are darker and more menacing than the material on their debut. The thrash metal elements are less prominent, with more emphasis on atmosphere resulting in a more black metal-oriented sound. If this is the future direction for Hordes of the Black Cross, then the future is looking very bleak indeed.
Funeral Moon brings total chaos upon the listener with their noxious brand of bestial black/death that runs you over like tank at full speed. Their music is certainly not for the faint of heart, with a sound that recalls the aural savagery of bands like Black Witchery and Bestial Warlust, but also contains off-kilter elements taken from hardcore and grind. The songs are well structured, enhanced by a solid production.
All said and done, this is a solid release, and one of my favorite splits to come out in a while.
